On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India. The flight was en route to London Gatwick Airport and was carrying 242 individuals, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals

The aircraft crashed into a residential area near B.J. Medical College in the Meghani Nagar locality, causing a massive fireball. At least 204 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage, and 41 individuals on the ground sustained injuries. Remarkably, one British passenger survived the crash and is currently receiving medical treatment 

The crash is believed to have been caused by a technical issue shortly after takeoff. The aircraft reportedly issued a mayday call before losing contact . This incident marks the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and is considered the deadliest aviation disaster of the 2020s 

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom have expressed their condolences. Rescue operations are ongoing, and all airport operations at Ahmedabad have been temporarily suspended
